I must admit, this year I have not been very good about remembering my camera or even worse getting it out and using when I do take it along. On a recent trip to Forestville/Mystery Cave State Park in Minnesota me and a couple of friends decided at the campground near Forestville, to drive over and see what Mystery Cave was like. My camera was forced to leave the confines of its padded case and spent most of the tour in my hand. We did the Scenic tour and it included an easy walk into the cave and covered roughly 0.75 of a mile. The temperature inside the cave was 48 degrees Fahrenheit, and for me it was a perfect temperature. Don't worry, for those that like it a little warmer, if you do not have a jacket or heavier shirt along with you, they do have jackets they will loan you. There is some water that drips around you, we had a little more dripping water than usual because of heavy rains in the days days prior. In fact, the drive into the cave was closed the day before due to high water over the bridge on the road into the parking area. Our tour guide was quite fun and had a sense of humor so we were able to joke some and we did truly enjoy the tour. Back to the camera, it did find its way out of the camera bag for more than just checking to see if the cards were loaded. The lens cap was actually removed and picture magic happened. It was a bit challenging to use fast enough shutter speeds, since I did not have a tripod or a monopod with me, and to contend with all of the cellphone camera flashes that were going off. The number of camera flashes dwindled as the tour went on, likely because the flash was causing many images to be overexposed. I did not use my pop-up flash, instead I used the aperture and shutter speeds, in concert with the ISO to manage the amount of light the sensor was getting. The park does offer a photography tour for anyone that is interested, check the park information for more details. To see more photos, visit the Mystery Cave gallery.
