There is a period of time each day after sunrise and before sunset that is commonly referred to as the Golden Hour by photographers. This time of the day gets it's name from the sun being low on the horizon and the light is usually a much softer red or orange color. The hour part is more a figure of speech and not a measurement of time. The amount of time that this light lasts is variable from day to day. Photographers seek out this time of day because the light is much softer and less intense than the strong direct sunlight of midday. Also during this time is when one is able to capture the long shadows that are cast from the low sun angle. You have probably seen sunset pictures that look like the scene is on fire with all of the warm, glowing orange light that was captured. Or you have maybe seen the orange dreamy coastline image where the water and sky are shades of orange and the sun looks like a ball as it appears to be sinking into the water. These types of images are taking during this very magical time of natural light each day. Watch the sky as the afternoon winds down. When you start to see long shadows from trees or buildings begin stretching across the landscape, notice the natural light around you. The ground and objects start picking up a yellow or orange softness to them. The Golden Hour has arrived and it is time to take pictures.

The weather has been interesting this year. The last few days we have been warmer than usual, warmer means almost equal to or above freezing, and with the colder snow covered ground, we have had a lot of fog. Fog when it's below freezing temperatures is not good for anyone or anything that likes to remain upright when walking because a film of ice forms on most exposed surfaces. However, this ice, Rime Ice, when it freezes on trees creates a white layer that looks almost like snow. When this ice forms, it is stunning to view with sunshine because all of the ice coated surfaces sparkle. If you have a couple of minutes, click the button below and enjoy nature's beauty. |
